Uniqlo x Emporium Melbourne

Project Background

Heritage meets bold innovation

Representing a multi-faceted and complex collaborative design process. TRG worked simultaneously with centre owners Vicinity Centres, retailer Uniqlo, local and state authorities on heritage conservation, and executed this landmark store layout and design with Gensler architecture firm – forming the largest and most ambitiously designed Uniqlo stores in the Southern Hemisphere, right in the heart of the Melbourne CBD in one of it’s most iconic historical buildings.

The store spans four levels and features a prime location on Ground level within the Lonsdale Façade of the original historical “Myer Emporium” heritage listed building. The scope for the design included combining multiple previously separate retail stores into a single footprint that flows seamlessly through the Uniqlo LifeWear philosophy and system.

The design also includes the UTme! Customisation studio which enables customers to create personalised T-shirts and tote bags in-store, as well as Uniqlo’s trademark tailoring and alterations in store. The bespoke detailing and branded environment features expanded on the traditional Uniqlo blueprint to saturate and strengthen the core features and language of the Uniqlo branded space, creating a unique, enjoyable, and impactful customer experience that is entirely unique to Uniqlo.
